Coastal Dry Dock and Repair Company, Brooklyn, NY
History of Coastal Dry Dock & Repair Company
Coastal Dry Dock & Repair Company was founded in 1950 and was initially based in Staten Island, NY. In 1971, it left Staten Island for the Brooklyn Navy Yard where it operated until 1987.
Coastal Dry Dock signed an agreement in 1980 with Seatrain Lines, Inc., also based in Brooklyn. The agreement allowed Coastal taking over Seatrain’s drydocks, shops, and other Navy Yard buildings and equipment. For the next few years, Coastal provided repairs, overhauls, and conversions for U.S. Navy ships, including frigates and destroyers.
In 1986, the company declared bankruptcy, dealing a serious blow to the economic viability of the Navy Yard.
Coastal Dry Dock and Asbestos
Asbestos was used in and on equipment on many ships. It was used throughout the shipbuilding industry and in ships built and repaired at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Employees of Coastal Dry Dock and Repair who worked on repairing, renovating, and converting ships were almost certainly exposed to asbestos-containing equipment. Asbestos, when breathed in for extended periods of time, can cause lung diseases and cancer, including mesothelioma. In fact, asbestos is the only known cause for mesothelioma.
Asbestos fibers are breathed in and can cling to the lungs for decades, causing scarring, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Symptoms typically show up after the disease has progressed, leaving many patients with few treatment options although new ones are being developed and tested.
What You Can Do If You Are Exposed To Asbestos
Ships built at Coastal Dry Dock were built with equipment that contained asbestos. This makes it very likely that people who worked on equipment on ships for Coastal Dry Dock, or even in its facilities, may also have been exposed.
It is not easy to spot specific symptoms for asbestos-related diseases. Many mimic minor colds or viruses. However, in the case of asbestos diseases, the symptoms last longer. Contact your physician if you have these problems for more than a few days or a week:
- Persistent coughing, particularly with blood
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest or abdominal pain
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fever
- Fatigue
Mention that you worked with or near asbestos.
