Harlem Personal Injury Attorney

Key Features of the Area
A walking tour through Harlem will grant you access to some of the most important landmarks in African-American history. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is the country’s largest research facility devoted to cultures with African roots. The facility regularly hosts exhibits, presentations and forums that showcase new areas of research in African culture.
Walking down to 135th street, you can visit the historic Harlem YMCA, where Jackie Robinson himself coached children’s baseball. Two blocks later at West 133rd Street, you’ll reach what was known as “Swing Street.” The area was once lined with clubs, speakeasies and after-hours hangouts. Visit the Shine Bar/Restaurant, a renowned jazz and world music club, to hear music from every part of the world.
Continue south onto the avenue’s island at 131st Street and spot the marker where the Tree of Hope was once located. Musicians who performed at the historic Lafayette Theater believed touching the tree was good luck. Its stump is now sitting in the corridor of the Apollo Theater, where performers continue this tradition of touching the tree before heading onstage.
Take a look at the Apollo Theater’s booking history, and you’ll see why its slogan is “where legends are made.” Music legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson Five performed here while launching their careers.
The building was constructed in 1914 as a burlesque house. Because of this, the theater still hides murals of the past behind the velvet wall coverings. In 1934, it became a variety music hall open to everyone and renamed itself the “125th Street Apollo.” Today, the historic Amateur Night at the Apollo takes place every Wednesday night.
A Brief History of Harlem
1868: Harlem begins to experience an economic boom. The New York and Harlem Railroad, Interborough Transit, and elevated railways connect Harlem to other parts of the city.
1918-1934: Many of the city’s African-American residents move north into the area, and Harlem becomes known as the “Black Capital of America.” The community flourishes in an age called the “Harlem Renaissance.” Residents create vibrant literature, poetry and jazz, and the country takes notice. People from all over begin flocking to experience the area’s nightlife.
1934: The Apollo Theater opens in what was once a burlesque house.
1936: Orson Welles produces his black Macbeth at Harlem’s Lafayette Theater.
1965: The Harlem Boys’ Choir is founded. The choir was a fixture of the community and toured the United States until 2007.
1990s: Restoration and redevelopment efforts begin on the neighborhood’s homes. The city takes on efforts to renovate abandoned buildings and create more housing opportunities. Today these efforts are creating a new wave of prosperity in Harlem.
