Key Features of the Area

Upper Manhattan heads farther uptown than the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, the neighborhoods that border each side of Central Park. Although heavily residential, it includes several museums, parks and notable attractions, such as The Cloisters, a castle-like museum with a collection of medieval art and artifacts.

The Museum of the City of New York, at Fifth Avenue and East 103rd Street, traces the city’s history from the 16th century to the present. Its neighbor, El Museo del Barrio, is devoted to Latino culture in the Americas dating back to the pre-Columbian era. A statue of jazz composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington gazes out at the city from Duke Ellington Circle, near the northeast corner of Central Park at Fifth Avenue and East 110th Street.

On the western side of Upper Manhattan sits the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Ave., the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. A civic and cultural institution, the cathedral is also known for its concerts and its annual Blessing of the Animals in honor of the Feast of Saint Francis.

North of the cathedral is Columbia University, an Ivy League school focusing on the arts, medicine and business, as well as Barnard College, a liberal arts college for women. The picturesque Riverside Church at 490 Riverside Drive is known for its vivid stained-glass windows and 74 bronze bells.

Other noteworthy sites in Upper Manhattan include the General Grant National Memorial for President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, the largest granite and marble tomb in North America; the City College of New York, a public school known for its engineering and liberal arts programs; and Fort Tyron Park, a New York City scenic landmark with extensive gardens, walking paths and meadows offering views of the Hudson and Harlem rivers.

Brief History of Upper Manhattan

1776: The Battle of Harlem Heights, a campaign of the Revolutionary War, is fought in what is now Morningside Heights and Harlem in Upper Manhattan.

1830s: The Hudson River Railroad line connects New York City to Albany, allowing the Upper West Side to evolve into a shipping, manufacturing and transportation corridor.

1850s to 1870s: Central Park is designed and created.

1870s: Construction of the Third Avenue El and the Second Avenue El link the middle class and artisans of the Upper East Side to the city’slower neighborhoods.

1904: The Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line, now part of the New York City subway, provides rapid transportation downtown from Manhattanville and surrounding neighborhoods, leading to an extension of the growing city.

1900s to 1930s: Irish immigrants, European Jews, Greek immigrants, Dominican immigrants, immigrants from Hungary and Poland, and refugees from Germany settle in Washington Heights, many fleeing Nazism.

1970s: The expansion of Columbia University, plus Barnard College, adds to Upper Manhattan’s strength as a cultural corridor and increases the demand for housing.

1992: Neighborhood activists promote renaming the area Frankfurt-on-the-Hudson, considered an outdated reference to its German past, to Hudson Heights, which has welcomed a number of Caribbean and African-American residents.

Location

Upper Manhattan stretches between the East River to Fifth Avenue on the eastern side of Manhattan and heads north from East 96th Street to the Harlem River. It also extends north from the northernmost border of Central Park at 110th Street and west to the Hudson River, covering the entire northern tip of Manhattan.

Interesting Facts About Upper Manhattan

Future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, famed centerfielder Willie Mays and 1950s singer Frankie Lymon lived in Sugar Hill, a historic district in the northern part of Hamilton Heights in Upper Manhattan.

The Graffiti Hall of Fame at Park Avenue and East 106th Street is a type of outdoor museum where street artists can show their skills on schoolyard walls.
The oldest house in Manhattan, the Morris-Jumel Mansion, is open for tours at 65 Jumel Terrace in Upper Manhattan. The mansion was built in 1765.
