Key Features of the Area

Rego Park takes its name from the Real Good Construction Company, which combined the first two letters of “Real” and “Good” in its development of the area in 1925. The company laid out semicircular streets and built more than 500 Tudor-style homes here, giving Rego Park a distinct look and feel.

The area has long had a significant Jewish population, with many Holocaust survivors settling here after World War II and, later, many immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Such a large number of Bukharian Jewish residents make this area their home that signs here feature the Russian Cyrillic alphabet.

Uzbek and Tajik cuisine can be found in many restaurants, featuring Central Asian flavors such as mutton, chickpeas, raisins, barberries, turnips, carrots, flatbreads, noodles and rice. Travel Channel host Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods raved about the bread at Rokhat Bakery in Rego Park and other tastes here in 2013.

The Rego Park Jewish Center at 97-30 Queens Blvd. is listed on both the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1948, it is an Art Deco landmark known for its colorful exterior mosaic by Hungarian-born artist A. Raymond Katz of scenes from the Old Testament.

In addition to its local shops, Rego Park has the large shopping mall Rego Center at 61035 Junction Blvd., built on the grounds of a former amusement park.

Brief History of Rego Park

1650s: English and Dutch farmers settle in the future Rego Park at Hempstead Swamp, growing hay, rye, corn, vegetables and oats. They call the community “Whiteput,” or “hollow creek,” a name later Anglicized as “Whitepot.”
1925: The Real Good Construction Company develops the area, renaming it Rego Park.
1930: The Independent Subway System, now part of the city’s subway system, begins work on eight IND Queens Boulevard Line stations in the area serving the E, F, M and R trains.
1972: A blaze later called the Rego Park Inferno engulfs several stores along 63rd Drive between Austin Street and the Long Island Rail Road overpass, also decimating the local library. A new library opened across the street.
2010: Census data lists the population of Rego Park at 28,260, a mix of young professionals and generations of immigrant families.

Location

Rego Park stretches from the Long Island Expressway, Corona and Elmhurst in the north to Metropolitan Avenue and part of Glendale. The neighborhood of Forest Hills lies to its east, and Woodhaven Boulevard and Middle Village border its west side.

Interesting Facts About Rego Park

• Cartoonist Art Spiegelman grew up in Rego Park and uses the neighborhood in his groundbreaking graphic novel Maus in scenes between the title character and his father.
• A mural under the Long Island Rail Road overpass on 63rd Drive celebrates the neighborhood with the words “Real Good,” the letters “RE” and “GO” bigger than the others.
• The city’s second Trader Joe’s grocery opened in Rego Park at 90-30 Metropolitan Ave. in 2007.
• The Lost Battalion Hall on Queens Boulevard, named after a World War I Army unit with many casualties, has been a community center since 1939. The
• New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has operated the building since 1960.
• Now demolished, the Drake Theatre was a longtime staple of Rego Park, opening in 1935 until closing in 2014. Caligula (1979) starring Malcolm McDowell had an exclusive run here in the 1980s.
