Key Features of the Area

Located in the center of the Bronx, Morris Park is named after businessman John Albert Morris, who built the Morris Park Racecourse here in 1889. The venue hosted both the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes horse races, as well as auto racing, before a fire destroyed the racetrack in 1910.
The neighborhood grew from the racetrack site, attracting a large population of Italian-Americans. Although significant numbers of Albanian, Asian and Hispanic residents have moved here over the past decade, the area’s Italian heritage is strong. Morris Park is known for its annual Columbus Day parade, begun in 1977, and after Italy’s 2006 World Cup victory, more than 30,000 people came to the neighborhood for an all-day party.

Morris Park has three notable hospitals and a distinguished medical school. Yeshiva University’s Jack and Pearl Resnick Campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is based at 1300 Morris Park Ave. NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi is located at 1400 Pelham Parkway South; Jack D. Weiler Hospital is located at 1825 Eastchester Road; and Calvary Hospital is at 1740 Eastchester Road. The neighborhood also is home to the Bronx Psychiatric Center, 1500 Waters Place, on the Bronx Campus of Mercy College.

Morris Park has a number of mom-and-pop retailers and restaurants, adding to its cozy feel. But it’s also within about three miles of two of the Bronx’s biggest attractions: the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo.

Brief History of Morris Park

1889: “Lottery King” and prominent horse racing figure John Albert Morris builds the Morris Park Racecourse on the future site of Morris Park.
1889 to 1910: The Morris Park Racecourse hosts the Preakness, the Belmont Stakes, auto racing and even a public air show before being destroyed in a fire.
1910s: The property is divided into lots, and the neighborhood of Morris Park begins to grow.
2010: Morris Park has about 40,000 residents, according to statistics.

Morris Park runs south from the Pelham Parkway South to just past Sacket Avenue, except for a portion south of Calvary Hospital that extends to Waters Place. Its eastern boundary is roughly past Bassett Avenue. Its western border extends southwest from Esplanade Avenue to Bronxdale Avenue.

Interesting Facts About Morris Park

• The Loreto Playground, which underwent a large renovation in 2012, offers a basketball court, a handball court and a roller hockey rink, as well as game tables, fencing, wheelchair-accessible equipment, and new benches and planting beds. The playground is named in honor of Alfred Loreto, a police officer and neighborhood resident who died in 1950 while foiling an attempted kidnapping of his neighbor.
• The John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home on Morris Park Avenue has a grass-roots Bronx Military Museum, a collection of medals and war memorabilia contributed by residents.
• Morris Park is featured in the films Raging Bull, Bad Lieutenant, True Love, The Seven-Ups, Summer of Sam, and Men in Black 3. Fittingly, former professional boxer Jake LaMotta, depicted in Raging Bull, once lived here. Other notable residents include mystery author Mary Higgins Clark and directors Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant) and Nancy Savoca (True Love).
