Key Features of the Area
Walking through West Harlem allows you to see some of the landmarks that have shaped New York City’s legacy. The area is especially known for being New York’s epicenter of academia. The area hosts seven institutions of higher learning. These include the City College of New York, the Manhattan School of Music, Columbia University, Barnard College, Harlem School of the Arts, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. Combined together, these colleges offer education in a wide array of subjects, from classics and religious studies to artistic development.
Due to so many colleges located in the area, West Harlem primarily houses college students and other temporary residents. However, the adjacent Morningside Heights has hosted some of America’s most notable citizens. President Dwight D. Eisenhower took residence in the area while working at Columbia University. Famous author F. Scott Fitzgerald lived at 200 Claremont while working on several of his works of literature. Visit Mill Korean Restaurant to see where J.D. Salinger’s family in the Glass Family Stories frequently ate lunch.
The area also hosts some of the most architecturally impressive cathedrals in the nation. Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Convent Avenue Baptist Church, Eglise de Notre Dame, Broadway Presbyterian Church, Riverside Church and Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine all draw crowds on a daily basis. Many of these churches are over 100 years old and contain strikingly beautiful worship sanctuaries.
