Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium), a medicine produced by the drug manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., is the only FDA-approved oral treatment for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. Interstitial cystitis occurs when the mucous layer of the bladder is damaged, thus causing pain and inflammation. Elmiron adheres to the bladder wall and acts as a protective mucosal lining against irritating substances.

Ophthalmologists began seeing side effects in the form of vision problems and vision loss in patients taking Elmiron in 2018. Dr. William Pearce and his colleagues at the Emory Eye Center revealed a study wherein six adult patients who took Elmiron revealed signs of retinal disease in the form of pigmentary maculopathy. Long-term dosing of Elmiron has been shown to affect the macula, the part of the retina that offers the viewer clear, crisp, central vision. Damage to the macula can cause pigmentary maculopathy, which produces a variety of visual symptoms including difficulty reading, slow adjustment to low light environments, blurred vision, and even blindness.
