Durez Plastics, now part of Occidental Chemical, has one of the largest concentrations of mesothelioma cases of any factory in New York.
Durez Plastics was initially named General Plastics and began as a small five-employee company in North Tonawanda, New York. Harry M. Dent founded the Durez Company and he personally delivered phenolic resin to buyers in his car. The company grew and In 1955, Durez Plastics merged with Hooker Chemical. Durez Plastics had over 1,000 employees at its peak, and became one of the most well-known producers of phenolic resin and plastic molding compounds nationwide. Plastic molding compounds are used to produce plastic products. The North Tonawanda plant closed in 1994.
Unfortunately, Durez Plastics’ molding compounds contained asbestos fibers, which were used as a filler. Laborers would mix asbestos with other materials to produce the compounds, which often caused asbestos fibers to fly into the air. Furthermore, the buildings in the Durez Plastics facility were insulated with asbestos. So much asbestos dust filled the manufacturing buildings at the North Tonawanda plants that it was often difficult to see. Alleyways and corridors between buildings were coated with asbestos fibers and asbestos fell from roof top dust collectors.
Many individuals who worked at Durez Plastics are just being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
