Local 210 members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America were regularly exposed to asbestos while on jobsites. Asbestos exposure contributed to the deaths of many Local 210 laborers. Local 210 represents union laborers in Erie County. The union was chartered in 1913 and had jurisdiction over construction, road construction, asbestos and hazardous material abatement, and job site cleanup. Laborers who worked for Local 210 were involved in almost every major construction project that took place in Erie County. Laborers worked on job sites including Bethlehem Steel, the Rath County Office Building, Republic Steel, Semet-Solvay, Allied Chemical, Marine Midland Center, the Main Place Tower, amongst others.
Before the 1970s, asbestos was a major component of the materials that Local 210 laborers applied and removed. Laborers also worked closely with insulators, carpenters, fireproofers, and electricians who worked with asbestos. These laborers did not wear protective gear while working.
Asbestos materials were used at large construction sites and industrial plants. Asbestos was incorporated into pipe covering, roof shingles, block insulation, joint compound and fireproof materials at construction sites. Local 210 laborers were also present for asbestos fireproofing and regularly cleaned up dust after drywall finishers sanded down asbestos joint compound. Consequently, many of our clients who were members of Local 210, are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel.
