Lockport Memorial Hospital began as Lockport City Hospital on 521 East Avenue in Lockport, New York in 1908. The hospital had only 18 beds when it first opened, but with more Lockport residents came increased demand. The hospital underwent several expansions from 1938 to 1983. The hospital was renamed the Lockport Memorial Hospital in 1959. In 1979, ownership of the hospital was transferred to a not-for-profit corporation.

Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at Lockport Memorial Hospital are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos was used in insulating materials at Lockport Memorial Hospital, including joint compound, fireproof materials, floor tile, and pipe covering. Asbestos insulation coated the hospital’s structural steel so as to protect the building from high heat temperatures and fire. Fireproof insulation was produced from a dry mix containing asbestos and sprayed onto surfaces with a hose. During the maintenance and repair of both machinery and the structural steel at Lockport Memorial Hospital, asbestos fibers would become agitated and would be emitted into the air. These fibers were inhaled by tradesman, including carpenters, ironworkers, pipefitters, and electricians.

Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers could also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like Lockport Memorial Hospital.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
