The partnership of James Bugdon and Hopkins Jenkins formed the Martisco Corporation in 1958. The corporation was based in Liverpool, New York and distributed plumbing supplies. Martisco was the designated distributor for the Johns-Mansville transite asbestos cement pipe in the Syracuse area.
Transite pipe is made from a conglomeration of asbestos and cement. It was produced in 13-foot lengths. Laborers utilized electric masonry, gas powered discs, and hand saws to cut the pipe. Contractors in the Syracuse area purchased transite pipes to use in roof drains, furnace flues, HVAC ducts, sanitary sewer drains, and utility lines.
