The New York State Capitol Building is located in Albany, New York. The building was constructed between 1867 and 1899. The building cost $25 million (equivalent to $768 million in 2019) to build and is known for being the most expensive government building of its time. The building’s architects were Thomas Fuller, Leopold Eidlitz, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Isaac Perry. The New York State Capitol Building was ranked by the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and was ranked as a National Landmark in 1979.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked on and at the New York State Capitol Building are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos pipe covering and insulating cement coated steam and hot water pipes. These pipes were regularly cut and handled, thus agitating the asbestos fibers within their insulation. Working with asbestos cement caused asbestos dust to fly into the air. Asbestos joint compounds were also applied to seams and joints over drywall tape at the New York State Capitol Building, another process that caused asbestos dust to be emitted into the air.
Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers could also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like the New York State Capitol Building.
Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
