Roblin Steel’s 12-acre site was built in 1910 as part of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). ALCO used the Roblin Steel plant, which was located on South Roberts Road in Dunkirk, New York, to produce heat exchangers, steel pipes, and tunnel shields. During WWII, ALCO produced naval vessels, missile housing, nozzles and boosters. In 1969, Roblin Steel bought the former ALCO site and started a steel reclamation business. The plant had three electric arc furnaces, dust collection system baghouses, an outdoor electrical substation, multiple transformer rooms, a compressor house, and rolling and hammer mills. The lot is located directly next to the Dunkirk site. Roblin also opened a rolling mill in North Tonawanda and a scrap facility in Lackawanna. Roblin Steel’s Dunkirk facility closed in 1987.

Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at Roblin Steel are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, Roblin Steel’s Dunkirk plant used asbestos refractory materials and asbestos pipe covering. Workers at the plant also used hot tops to make steel. The interior of each hot top was coated with asbestos insulating mortar or asbestos insulating boards. The insulating boards were mostly manufactured by Ferro Engineering and Foseco Inc. Removing asbestos ash from the hot tops caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air and inhaled by workers.

Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers can also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like Roblin Steel.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
