PFAS Contamination and Exposure Lawsuit
Table of Contents
Commonly known as PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances earned the name “forever chemicals” due to their persistent nature in the environment – they do not decompose. These substances come in over 12,000 variations and are present in numerous products ranging from food packaging, clothing, shoes, cosmetics, contact lenses, wall paint, and even feminine hygiene products.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has classified PFAS chemicals as hazardous and they have been associated with an extensive list of health effects. According to research conducted by Harvard and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), not all PFAS are harmful, but many can lead to severe illnesses such as cancer, liver damage, reduced fertility, and an increased risk of asthma and thyroid disease.
Where are PFAS found?
PFAS chemicals are the active ingredient in firefighting foam. When combined with water and released, the foam creates a film that rapidly deprives the fire of oxygen, cools it down, successfully extinguishes the flames, and effectively prevents any chance of reignition.
For decades, this fire suppression foam has been utilized at military bases, airports, and by civilian firefighting organizations for training exercises and responding to fuel-based fires, which are challenging to control with water alone. Unfortunately, firefighters were not informed about the hazardous chemicals present in the foam, known to accumulate in the body and potentially pose a cancer or disease risk.
More PFAS Firefighter Exposure
A lot of protective gear for firefighters comprises three layers: a thermal liner in direct contact with the skin, a moisture barrier, and a water-repellent outer shell on the top. PFAS concentrations were found to be high on the outer second and third layers. This presents a concerning situation for firefighters, as they often endure 10-12 hour shifts wearing gear that can be nearly as hazardous as the fires they bravely face.
Potential Medical Conditions Due to Contamination and Exposure Include:
- Kidney cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Bladder cancer
- Thyroid disease
- Liver cancer
