General Public Utilities was a publicly traded company located in Parsippany, New Jersey. In 1996, General Public Utilities created a new division called GPU Energy, which became the holding company for 3 utility operation companies – one being Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). GPU Energy operated independently for 5 years, until 2001 when they were acquired by First Energy. Jersey Central Power & Light History and Operation
In the 1960s, Jersey Central Power & Light began construction on the Forked River’s Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, which was fully functioning in 1969. During operation, the Oyster Creek generation station sat on over 1,000 acres of land next to Barnegat Bay. Large water pumps at the edge of the bay would draw in over one billion gallons of water each day to regulate their power-generating activities. In 2003 the plant became the property of Exelon and was shut down in 2019 due to changes in power plant regulations.

In 1899 the dangers of asbestos were first brought to light. In 1906 the first documented death related to asbestos was confirmed, and in the early 1900s, researchers began to notice a large number of lung problems and early deaths in asbestos-mining towns. Although these health issues were documented, asbestos was still used in the construction of generating stations and other products for years to come.
Who May Have Been Affected
As the construction of the Oyster Creek generating station took place in the 1960s, hundreds of local independent contractors and subcontractors were exposed to asbestos dust. Materials like ceiling and floor tiles, drywall, cement, and paint contained various amounts of asbestos. Materials like these were used to build the physical plant. Upon construction completion, the power-generating machinery was installed. Pipes, electrical wires, generators, and other machinery that involved high temperatures were wrapped with asbestos insulation. As a result, many who worked within these systems were exposed to asbestos.
Years later, these workers are now developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. It is important to note that mesothelioma has a latency period of 15 to 60 years. Workers who were exposed to asbestos decades ago may only now begin to show signs of illness.
