In 1931, New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Power Authority Act into law, which established The Power Authority of the State of New York, now known as the New York State Power Authority (NYPA). The NYPA is the largest state public power utility in the United States. It provides one of the lowest-cost electricity in the nation, in comparison to other public-benefit corporations. The NYPA serves over 1,000 customers and employs a team of more than 2,000 professionals. They have over 1,400 circuit miles of transmission lines and operate 16 generating facilities; most notably the St. Lawrence-Franklin D Roosevelt Power Project and the Robert Moses (Niagara Power Project) in Lewiston, NY.
The St. Lawrence Power Project began construction in1952 which licensed the NYPA to develop the U.S portion of a power dam that crossed the Canada-US border. It first achieved power in 1958 and was renamed the St. Lawrence-Franklin D Roosevelt Power Project in honor of the NYPAs founder.
Just a few years prior, a landslide occurred and destroyed most of Niagara Mohawk Power Corporations’ power plant, resulting in a shortage of power that damaged thousands of manufacturing jobs. The NYPA responded to this emergency by beginning work on their second hydroelectric generating station. Upon completion three years later, it was the largest facility of its kind in the Western World.
Generating stations produce electricity by a moving fluid (water, steam, combustion gasses, or air) pushing through a series of blades, creating a rotation. The generator then converts the mechanical energy of the spinning blades into electrical energy. As expected, the machinery put in place to create this energy reaches extremely hot temperatures. Although health issues related to asbestos began being documented in 1906, any plant built between the 1930s into the 1980s still used asbestos products to prevent fires and protect the machinery, as asbestos is an effective insulator for intense heat. Plant workers who maintained, repaired, or operated this machinery were inevitably exposed to these toxic fibers, and are unfortunately being diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other asbestos-related diseases.
The NYPA operates a large number of generating facilities, where exposure to this cancer-causing material has occurred.
