The USS Calcaterra (DER-390), a radar picket ship, served in the U.S. Navy for nearly two decades. Originally launched in 1943 as the USS Calcaterra (DE-390), a destroyer escort, it was later reclassified as a radar picket ship in 1954 and served until 1973. The Calcaterra played a critical role during the Cold War, detecting incoming bombers and serving as an essential component of national defense. The ship sustained damage to its forward spaces, causing flooding that required extensive repairs in Boston. After being decommissioned, it was sold for scrap in 1974.
Asbestos Exposure on USS Calcaterra DER-390
Table of Contents
The USS Calcaterra contained asbestos in various components, including boilers, turbines, pipes, valves, gaskets, and other machinery. Maintenance, repairs, or general ship operations could disturb these materials, releasing asbestos fibers into the air and putting sailors and shipyard workers at risk. Prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers is linked to severe illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis, which often develop decades after exposure.
Who is at Risk?
Sailors who served aboard the USS Calcaterra, especially those in high-risk areas like engine rooms, boiler rooms, or maintenance facilities, were at significant risk of asbestos exposure. Shipyard workers who constructed, repaired, or overhauled the ship also faced heightened exposure risks. Additionally, family members of sailors and workers could have experienced secondary exposure through asbestos fibers carried home on clothing or equipment.
