The USS Charles H Roan (DD-853), nicknamed the “Jolly Cholly,” was a Gearing-class destroyer that served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1973. Commissioned in Newport, Rhode Island, the ship played an active role in naval operations in the Mediterranean, South American ports, and western Pacific battles and exercises. It also participated in the Korean War and supported naval operations during the Vietnam War. In 1973, the Charles H Roan was transferred to the Turkish Navy and stricken from the U.S. Naval Vessel Register.

Asbestos Exposure on USS Charles H Roan DD-853

The USS Charles H Roan contained asbestos in various components, including pipes, boilers, electrical equipment, valves, and gaskets. These materials were widely used during its construction and operational years. Asbestos-containing components can release microscopic fibers into the air, creating a significant health hazard for sailors and maintenance personnel.

Inhalation of asbestos fibers is linked to severe illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. These diseases often develop decades after exposure, putting many veterans at risk long after their service.

Who is at Risk?

Those most at risk of asbestos exposure aboard the USS Charles H Roan include sailors, officers, engineers, and maintenance personnel who worked directly with or near asbestos-containing materials. Shipyard workers involved in the ship’s repairs or renovations also faced significant risks. Additionally, family members of these individuals may have experienced secondary exposure through asbestos fibers carried home on uniforms or equipment.
