The USS Duluth (LPD-6), an amphibious transport dock ship, served in the U.S. Navy for four decades. Commissioned in 1965, the Duluth was the last ship built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard before it closed. Throughout its service, the ship supported various military operations and humanitarian missions, primarily in the Pacific Ocean, with its home port in San Diego. The Duluth was decommissioned in 2005, made a brief stop in Hawaii, and was ultimately scrapped in Texas in 2014. Like many naval vessels of its era, the Duluth contained asbestos, posing significant health risks to those who served aboard or worked on the ship.
Asbestos Exposure on USS Duluth LPD-6
Table of Contents
The USS Duluth contained asbestos in components such as pumps, valves, boilers, pipes, gaskets, and other shipboard systems. Personnel were exposed to asbestos while performing maintenance, repairs, or operations involving these parts. When asbestos fibers are released into the air, they are easily inhaled. Exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to severe illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis, which may not appear until decades after exposure.
Who is at Risk?
Sailors who served aboard the USS Duluth, especially those working in high-risk areas like boiler rooms, engine rooms, or maintenance facilities, were at significant risk of asbestos exposure. Shipyard workers who constructed, repaired, or decommissioned the ship also faced heightened exposure risks. Additionally, family members of these individuals may have been secondarily exposed through asbestos fibers carried home on clothing or equipment.
