Bedford Park Personal Injury Attorney
Located in the north central section of the Bronx, Bedford Park spans the area between the New York Botanical Gardens and Lehman College. Before becoming absorbed by New York City, the area was an unincorporated suburb of mostly farmland just outside of a town known as Kingsbridge. The suburb is composed of five tracts that house roughly 24,000 New Yorkers, many of whom are foreign-born immigrants.
Bedford Park is a melting pot of culture. Strolling through the area, one may find an Albanian double-headed eagle, Our Lady of Guadalupe, a Shamrock or Arabic calligraphy. Indeed, walk into any convenience store and you will find newspapers from all over the world.

Key Features of the Area
Bedford Park is home to some of the area’s oldest churches. The Bedford Park Congregational Church was built in 1882. In 2000, it was designated an official city landmark. In addition, the St. Phillip Catholic Church was dedicated to the Italian saint when the area was home to a number of Italian immigrant laborers who were contracted to construct the Jerome Park Reservoir. The cornerstone of that church was quarried from the area that became the reservoir.
Located along the reservoir is an “education mile” that houses a number of schools and an area college. The area has three high schools (Walton, DeWitt Clinton and Bronx Science), two elementary schools and Lehman College.
History of Bedford Park
The suburb known as Bedford Park was once mostly farmland located just outside the town of Kingsbridge. In 1886, Leonard Jerome and August Belmont developed the area into the Jerome Park Racecourse, where residents could place bets on the horses. It was from this point that Bedford Park would begin to take shape.
Some 40 villas were built on a street known as Villa Avenue. The Italian and Irish immigrants who built the Jerome Park Reservoir would fill those small houses. After World War I, the area saw a number of new housing developments. Most of these were middle-class residents of various ethnic backgrounds who had moved into the area from Manhattan.
Throughout the 1970s and ’80s, when other areas of the Bronx were hit hard by inner-city drug use, Bedford Park rallied against the problem, actively engaging with police to limit the availability of drugs. Today, the area may be overshadowed by Riverdale, but its Victorian homes are a major draw for architecture buffs.
Interesting Facts about Bedford Park
