A History of AC&S Asbestos Products
Table of Contents
The company known today as ACandS Inc. has its roots in the Armstrong Cork Company, which started installing cork insulation products in cold storage facilities in the early 1900s. By the 1930s, it had acquired several local insulation contractors and was a national insulation contracting business.
As it grew, Armstrong Cork began to produce and install medium- and high-temperature insulation products for commercial and industrial applications. These products contained asbestos, a fibrous silicate material with natural heat-resistance qualities.
Asbestos is a known carcinogen that can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other serious illnesses. Despite the known dangers, many manufacturers used asbestos in a variety of materials as late as the early 1980s. In fact, its use has still not been banned in the United States.
Armstrong Cork Company became known as Armstrong Contracting and Supply Corporation in 1958 and, in the late 1960s, was sold to its employees in a leveraged buyout and renamed ACandS Inc. A company known as North Lime Corporation was formed in 1969 to facilitate this transaction.
North Lime Corp. later became Irex Corporation, which today is a holding company for several construction and contracting firms.
ACandS Inc. primarily engaged in the installation of thermal and mechanical insulation. Effective January 1, 1974, ACandS adopted a policy that it would no longer furnish or install friable asbestos-containing materials. ACandS also performed asbestos abatement and other environmental remediation work in the 1980s.
Certain products installed by ACandS between 1958 and 1974 are known to have contained asbestos. This includes a variety of pipe coverings, cements, and block insulation.
Like many companies that had a history of producing asbestos-containing products, ACandS faced numerous lawsuits at the close of the 20th century, and it filed for bankruptcy in September 2002.
After years of litigation, the ACandS Asbestos Settlement Trust was created in 2008 as part of the ACandS Chapter 11 Joint Plan of Reorganization. The trust was created to process and pay (or “liquidate”) valid asbestos personal injury claims. Meanwhile, ACandS was allowed to restructure and remains in business today.
Were You Exposed to Asbestos at a Confirmed ACandS Site?
As part of its bankruptcy settlement and the establishment of a trust fund for asbestos claim payments, ACandS Inc. (aka AC&S) identified nearly 1,500 sites across the country where exposure to asbestos-containing ACandS products had been possible for decades.
They include Armstrong Cork Company sites in Fulton, N.Y.; Lancaster, Pa.; and several other states, as well as many other factories, power plants, naval shipyards, office buildings, hospitals, schools, restaurants, and multi-tenant residences across the United States.
