The Auburn Steel Company was launched in 1974 in Auburn, New York. Auburn Steel took previously used steel and melted it into new objects, including bullets. Operations took place in a building that was approximately 812,000 square feet. It was discovered in 1983 that the steel at Auburn Steel had been contaminated with Cobalt 60. Because of the contamination, Auburn Steel underwent several lawsuits and a $2 million environmental cleanup. Today, Auburn Steel is owned by Nucor Steel, a North American manufacturer of merchant bar and rebar, engineered bar, structural steel, carbon steel plates, and sheet steel products.

Unfortunately, many workers at Auburn Steel have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Our clients were exposed to asbestos while working with materials like pipe covering, hot tops (cast iron devices that sit atop steel molds), and insulation, all of which were heated to high temperatures. Asbestos was often used as a refractory material and some of our clients inhaled bits of asbestos dust while working at Auburn Steel that would later give them lung cancer or mesothelioma.

Ferro Engineering and Foseco Inc. asbestos insulating boards were placed inside the one-foot to ten-foot-wide hot tops, a process that emitted asbestos dust into the air. These boards often needed replacement and cleaning, which required workers to air hose the asbestos-containing ash from the hot tops.

Many individuals who worked as laborers, finishers, inspectors, and molders at Auburn Steel are being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.

At Belluck & Fox, our nationally recognized asbestos attorneys have extensive experience fighting for families and workers exposed to asbestos. We are proud to have secured more than $1 billion so far for asbestos victims and their families.
