Buffalo Pumps was founded in 1887 in Western New York. The company began as a producer of double pistons and centrifugal pumps and expanded to manufacture navy and marine pumps. Its facility was located in North Tonawanda, New York. The plant consisted of a 94,300-square foot plant that housed all operations of pump production from start to finish. Buffalo Pumps has a significant wartime history, given that the Liberty ships of World War II used Buffalo Pumps. Consequently, Buffalo Pumps received an Army-Navy “E” banner from the U.S. Armed Forces.
Buffalo Pumps underwent several mergers and acquisitions. In the 1930s, Buffalo Pumps was sold to the Buffalo Forge Company. In 1979, the Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation purchased Buffalo Pumps, Inc.
Unfortunately, Buffalo Pumps continued to use asbestos fibers in their pumps until the 1980s. Many of our clients who worked at Buffalo Pumps have been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. The asbestos marine and industry pumps frequently underwent maintenance that caused asbestos dust to be emitted into the air. Even though knowledge about the hazards of asbestos was available, Buffalo Pumps, Inc. continued to use asbestos to make their pumps.
