Ground was broken for the Canandaigua VA Medical Center in 1931. An additional 346 acres were purchased that same year, and another 16 acres were purchased in 1944. The hospital opened in 1933 and in 1944, the hospital reached its current size. The center included an administration building, dining room and kitchen building, ward buildings, a recreation building, laundry, warehouse, central heating plant, attendants’ quarters, sewage pump houase, garage, and gatehouse.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked on the Canandaigua VA Medical Center are now being diagnosed with mesothelioma. The steam and water pipes at the center were coated in asbestos pipe covering and insulating cement. Repair and maintenance to these pipes often resulted in asbestos fibers being emitted into the air. In addition, the three boilers in the Canandaigua VA Medical Center were coated with asbestos block insulation, which was often sawed down in a manner that released more asbestos fibers into the air.
Individuals who worked at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center are being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
