Garlock Sealing Technologies was founded in 1887 by Olin Garlock. The company is known for manufacturing fluid-sealing products like gaskets and compression packing. Palmyra, New York housed Garlock’s main processing facility.
Before December 31, 2000, Garlock Sealing Technology’s products contained asbestos including asbestos cloth, packing materials and gaskets. Raw asbestos fibers arrived at the Garlock Palmyra plant in 100-pound bales. Asbestos was then poured into hoppers and torn apart manually. The fibers then went through a carding machine to create a type of yarn, which was then spun into a thread. Laborers employed a loom to weave the asbestos thread into cloth, gaskets and packing.
Asbestos fibers were also mixed with various materials at Garlock Palmyra including rubber, staining agents, and filler materials. The materials were combined and then squeezed into sheet gasket material.
Furthermore, Garlock Palmyra plant’s equipment was coated in asbestos block insulation and pipe covering. Unfortunately, workers also inhaled asbestos fibers while repairing and maintaining the steam lines, pumps, valves and boilers.
Many individuals who worked at Garlock Sealing Technologies are being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
In addition, Garlock sold its asbestos-containing gaskets and packets all over New York and the United States. It also sold its gaskets and packing to the United States Navy. Maintenance mechanics, steamfitters, pipefitters, plumbers and millwrights used these asbestos gaskets and packing to repair pumps, valves, boilers and other equipment.
Garlock filed for asbestos bankruptcy protection and there is now a Garlock Trust available for people with mesothelioma. Joe Belluck, our founding partner, is co-chair of the Garlock Trust asbestos committee. Belluck & Fox has represented hundreds of workers who worked at the Garlock plant or worked with Garlock gaskets and packing at factories and in the Navy.
At Belluck & Fox, our nationally recognized asbestos attorneys have extensive experience fighting for families and workers exposed to asbestos. We are proud to have secured more than $1 billion so far for asbestos victims and their families.
