Gouverneur Talc is a subsidiary of R.T. Vanderbilt that was started as a mining and milling company in Balmat, New York in 1948. R.T. Vanderbilt, an industrial minerals and chemicals company, began in 1916 and made Gouverneur Talc its subsidiary in 1974. In the 1970s, Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Vanderbilt produced talc for paint, ceramics, and plastic molding compounds. In 2008, Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Vanderbilt shut down its Balmat facility.
Unfortunately, many laborers who worked at and in the Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Vanderbilt mines have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Talc is a mineral blend of silica and magnesia with chemical properties that are substantially the same as asbestos. Talc was first discovered in Gouverneur in 1867 and was quickly made famous for its large quantity. To this day, Jefferson County, a county south of Gouverneur, has one of the highest mortality rates of mesothelioma in the United States.
Many individuals (including outside contractors) who worked at Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Vanderbilt were exposed to asbestos when using crushing machines, boilers, pipes, and other insulated equipment. Before the 1970s, there were no regulations on asbestos/talc and workers were thus exposed to it when opening, cleaning and repairing equipment. Workers did not wear protective gear or masks when working on the machines in the mines at Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Washington.
Many individuals who worked as mill workers, miners, and mechanics at Gouverneur Talc/R.T. Washington are being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
