New Jersey Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) is a publicly traded diversified energy company that is located in New Jersey. It is one of the ten largest electric companies in the United States. PSE&G is the largest subsidiary of the Public Service Enterprise Group. Upon its foundation in 1903, over 400 gas, electric, and transportation companies in New Jersey were combined to create the Public Service Corporation. In 1928, the corporation merged all of its electric and gas utilities into a single company, PSE&G. The Public Service Corporation also formed an umbrella for their transportation companies called the Public Service Coordinated Transport (PSCT). In 1948 however, the parent company, Public Service Corporation, dissolved, and PSE&G became its own independent company, with the Public Service Coordinated Transport as its subsidiary. PSCT was renamed in 1971 to Transport of New Jersey and was sold the New Jersey Transit, leaving PSE&G on its own as an exclusive utility company.

PSE&G covers the population of a 2,600-square-mile diagonal area across the state of New Jersey, covering counties from Bergen to Gloucester. PSE&G is the largest provider of gas and electric services. They service 1.8 million gas customers and 2.2 million electric customers. These customers are located in urban, suburban, and rural communities, which include six of New Jersey’s largest cities. In order to service all of these customers, they receive power from four main subsidiaries: PSE&G Nuclear, PSE&G Fossil, PSE&G Energy Resources & Trade, and PSE&G Power Ventures.

PSE&G Nuclear operates 3 different nuclear reactors in 2 separate facilities. They also own one reactor at the Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station and operate two reactors at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant. PSE&G and Exelon Corporate share a partnership with the reactors at the Salem plant as well as the Peach Bottom Nuclear Generating Station, where both Exelon and PSE&G have a 50/50 joint venture.

As PSE&G is one of the largest electric companies in the US, and operates multiple nuclear reactors and generating stations, exposure to asbestos-containing materials was inevitable. Up until the 1980s, asbestos exposure was nearly unavoidable in generating stations. In the 1930s, doctors and scientists began informing power plant owners about the severe health risks and dangers of asbestos exposure. Although the information was there, these cancer-causing materials were still used. Pipes, electrical wires, generators, and other machinery that involved high temperatures were wrapped with asbestos insulation. Any worker who installed, removed, replaced, or otherwise worked directly in contact with these systems was exposed to asbestos. As a result, many who worked within these systems and were exposed to asbestos are now developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. It is important to note that mesothelioma has a latency period of 15 to 60 years. Workers who were exposed to asbestos decades ago may only now begin to show signs of illness.
