Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. is located in the northwestern suburbs of New York. They provide electric and gas services for over 745,000 people in multiple counties including upstate New York and northern New Jersey. In 1899, S.R Bradley originally founded a company called Rockland Light and Power Company, by organizing a number of smaller gas and electric companies. Similarly the same pattern was happening in Orange County. Several small gas and electric companies were popping up throughout the area, and were eventually merged into the Orange County Public Service Company, Inc. In 1926, The Orange County Public Service merged into Rockland Light and Power to become a powerhouse in the region.

There was one other powerhouse in the area called Orange and Rockland Electric Company. As to be expected, in 1958 the Rockland Light and Power Company eventually merged with Orange and Rockland Electric Company, creating what is now known as Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. In 1999, Orange Rockland Utilities, Inc. followed its well known merger pattern, and became officially owned by Consolidation Edison, Inc., one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. has 3,994 miles of overhead electric distribution lines and 1,849 miles of underground electric distribution lines. There are also 547 miles of electric transmission lines. They source their electricity from all over New York by solar, wind, and generating stations. Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc employs approximately 1,200 men and women.

A generating station, more frequently known as a power plant, has been linked to harboring asbestos-containing products. Asbestos is the name given to six minerals with long, thin fibers found naturally in rocks and soil. Asbestos is a carcinogen known to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and many other health problems. In power plants, this cancer-causing substance is used to insulate machinery that reaches hot temperatures. Plant workers would either spray asbestos insulating material directly onto heated machinery. Additionally, they would apply asbestos insulation to pipes, electrical wires, and generators alike.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. has two power plants where asbestos-containing materials were used on various types of equipment; Bowline Powerhouse in Havestraw, NY and Lovett Powerhouse in Tompkins Cove, NY. As a result, many who worked within these systems and were exposed to asbestos are now developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. It is important to note that mesothelioma has a latency period of 15 to 60 years. Workers who were exposed to asbestos decades ago may only now begin to show signs of illness. Exposure to asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, and there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.
