In 1920, Fred Locke’s Lima, New York porcelain insulator plant was rebuilt as the Porcelain Insulators Corporation (PINCO). The plant was on East Main Street in Lima, New York. The Joslyn Manufacturing and Supply Company acquired PINCO when the company’s primary stockholder died. The company underwent several expansions and closed in 1987.

Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at PINCO are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. The PINCO plant used asbestos pipe covering, asbestos cement, and asbestos block insulation that constantly had to be maintained and repaired. Asbestos block insulation coated the walls of the dry room and steam room. Employees used saws to cut away at pipe coverings, which caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air. Asbestos cement was mixed with water also roused asbestos dust.

Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at Knowlton Brothers are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Boilers, water and steam pipes at the company were coated in asbestos block insulation, insulating cement, and pipe covering. Pumps and valves were also coated in asbestos insulation. Laborers also used asbestos gaskets between flanges, pumps, and valves. Unfortunately, when much of this machinery was repaired and replaced, asbestos dust was emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.

Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers can also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like PINCO.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
