In 1898, Dr. Roswell Park established the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Prior to being called The Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the hospital was called the New York State Pathological Laboratory. It was the world’s first institute for cancer study and treatment. In 1904, the institute conducted the world’s first chemotherapy trial. In 1911, the institute was renamed the New York State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases. In 1946, the State Department of Health renamed the institute the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. In 1997, the institute became a non-profit public benefit corporation. Roswell Park is currently affiliated with the University of Buffalo’s medical school.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos joint compound, pipe covering, and insulating cement were contained in the structure of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Fireproof insulation coated the structural steel at the institute. The insulation was a dry mixture that was combined with water and then sprayed onto the structural steel.
Asbestos joint compound was also used between sheets of drywall. Joint compound was produced as a dry mix that was combined with water and applied. This process caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.
The steam boilers which supplied Roswell Park with hot water and heat were also insulated with asbestos. The pipes, valves, and pumps that made up the system were coated with asbestos insulation, another process which caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.
Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers can also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
