In 1931, Sid Harvey Industries was founded in Hempstead, New York. The company produces and delivers heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration supplies. Sid Harvey Industries, Inc. was initially a wholesale retailer for parts and equipment for the oil heating industry. During World War II, Sid Harvey Industries expanded throughout New York State. The company opened branches in Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Rochester, Watertown, Poughkeepsie, and Brooklyn. In the 1950s, the company purchased smaller supply houses throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. In the 1980s, the company expanded into Midwestern and Southern states. Currently, Sid Harvey Industries manufactures and distributes HVAC industry parts. There are 85 locations in 20 states and the company makes $120 million annually.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at Sid Harvey Industries are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos was used as furnace cement, insulating cement, rope, packing, and gaskets that accompanied boilers and furnaces. Sid Harvey Industries distributed asbestos products to companies and contractors. The company also distributed asbestos gasket material, block insulation, asbestos boards, raw asbestos, pipe covering, and asbestos tape. The majority of these materials were labeled with the Sid Harvey name.
Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers can also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like Knowlton Brothers.
Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
