In 1856, the leaders of the Universalist Church established St. Lawrence University. The campus initially had four buildings but underwent several expansions that left it with thirty buildings. Today, St. Lawrenc University has 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students and is located on 1,000 acres in Canton, New York.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at St. Lawrence University are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, laborers worked with asbestos materials that were used due to their heat resistance. The buildings of the school were coated in asbestos fireproofing materials which came from dry bags and were mixed with water and sprayed onto structural steel. Asbestos joint compound was also utilized to fill seams and joints between sheets of drywall. With each layer of joint compound came a sanding process. Pipes, valves, boilers, and pumps were also coated in asbestos insulation. The agitation of these systems often caused asbestos to be emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.
