St. Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1857 by the Catholic Daughters of Charity. It was the first hospital in Rochester, New York and was located on Genesee Street. In 1941, the main building at St. Mary’s was built, and in 1985, the hospital underwent a massive expansion. The hospital merged with Park Ridge Hospital in 1997 to form the Unity Health System. The hospital is now called Unity St. Mary’s and is known for its community healthcare services.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at St. Mary’s Hospital are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos materials were used during the construction and repair of the hospital. Both union and non-union laborers were subject to inhaling asbestos dust and particles.
