The State University of New York at Binghamton began as a branch of Syracuse University. It was founded in 1946 as Triple Cities College. Students would study at Binghamton for their first two years and then move on to Syracuse University. In 1950, Triple Cities College merged with the State University of New York and it was renamed Harpur College. In 1961, Harpur College expanded onto a new campus in Vestal New York. In 1965, Harpur College was designated as University Center in the SUNY system. The campus has 387 acres of land and over sixty buildings. SUNY Binghamton offers bachelor’s and doctorate-level degrees and enrolls 15,000 students per year.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at SUNY Binghamton are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Asbestos insulating cement, block insulation, fireproof insulation, and pipe covering were used in the maintenance and repair of buildings at SUNY Binghamton. Fireproof insulation also coated the structural steel of buildings on campus. The fireproofing came as a dry mixture of linen, cement, and asbestos that was packaged in fifty-pound bags. The mixture was then combined with water and sprayed onto the structural steel. Pipes, valves, pumps, and boilers were also coated in asbestos insulation. Removing and replacing pipe covering, insulating cement, and block insulation caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.
