SUNY Canton began as the School of Agriculture at St. Lawrence University in 1906 along the banks of the Grasse River in Lawrence County, New York. In 1941, the school became the New York State Agricultural and Technical Institute. In 1948, it became a part of the SUNY system. The college changed its name for the final time in 1987 when it became the State University of New York College of Technology at Canton (SUNY Canton). SUNY Canton offers associate and bachelor’s degrees as well as one-year certificates. Today, SUNY Canton has three academic schools including the Canino School of Engineering and Technology, School of Business and Liberal Arts, and School of Health, Science, and Criminal Justice. The college has 3,000 undergraduates and a 555-acre campus with twenty buildings.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at SUNY Canton are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Most of the buildings at SUNY Canton were built between the 1940s and the 1970s. Before the 1970s, asbestos materials were used to construct many of the buildings at SUNY Canton. Union and non-union laborers worked on these buildings and consequently came into contact with asbestos.
