SUNY Fredonia was founded in 1826, making it one of the oldest campuses in the SUNY system. The campus joined the SUNY system in 1948. The campus in Chautauqua County has thirty buildings, fourteen of which are residence halls, lecture halls, an athletic complex, and a concert theater.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at SUNY Fredonia are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos was used to build SUNY Fredonia’s campus in the forms of fireproofing, joint compound and pipe covering. Construction of most of the campus’ buildings began in the early 1960s. Fire proofers used Monokote and other fireproofing materials which were made of mixtures of asbestos, cement, and linen to coat the structural steel of many of the buildings at SUNY Geneseo. Asbestos joint compound coated seams and joints over drywall tape. The compound was then sanded down, a process that caused asbestos fibers to be emitted into the air and inhaled by laborers.
